Global Learning, Sweden
Lärande utan gränser/Global learning
is a politically and religiously independent organization open to anyone who is interested in development cooperation focusing on teaching and learning.
The organization’s main aim is to strengthen the commitment to issues regarding development among all who work in the educational sector. The organization’s outspoken ambition is to develop and support projects dealing with formal and informal learning in developing countries.
Internationalization and the enhancement of knowledge about “sustainable development” has been a central issue in Swedish schools during the last decades. Supporting development projects in other countries help us to learn more about the global society and its pre requisitions.
By integrating a development project in the every day activities in school the opportunity is given to show solidarity to children in other countries in practice. At the same time this gives possibilities to deepen the understanding of a good education and the meaning of life-long learning also in Sweden.
The organization was started out of the experiences from a study visit to Bangladesh made by teachers and principals from 6 Swedish schools and representatives from Swedish town councils in the winter of 2004. The visit was arranged by SIDA/The Global School
The visit in Bangladesh made it clear to the participants that questions concerning global development are not only vital to people outside the Western world, but are equally important for the future of our own children.
Just as children and young people in Bangladesh need access to good education in order to be able be active in society, young people in Sweden also need to be given a deeper understanding about the prerequisites and possibilities of the developing countries.
“Drop-out-schools”
The first project which Global Learning is involved in is to support drop-out schools in Bangladesh.
The project is run in cooperation with PROSHIKA – one of the NGOs in Bangladesh.
The fact, that many children and young people drop out of school, is maybe one of the greatest global development problems. Children who are given the opportunity to finish their basic education have better chances to getting jobs and to be able to take an active part in society. Through this they can also help furthering the living conditions for poor people.
